Important Update on Self-Hosting ProjectionLab
From the beginning, our goal with ProjectionLab has been to build the best financial planning platform. As an engineer, I loved the idea of offering a self-hosted version alongside the web app, but as we’ve grown, it has become clear that the web app is where we need to focus moving forward.
Maintaining both versions has split efforts between two backend codebases, slowing development and increasing complexity. Because of this, we’ve made the decision to release future updates to the web app only.
For most of you, nothing changes—99.4% of people already use the web version. This decision only affects self-hosted deployments.
What’s Changing for Self-Hosting
- Existing self-hosted deployments will remain operational indefinitely.
- We will provide bug fixes for self-hosted deployments through the end of 2025.
- Development on the web version will continue with even more frequent updates and improvements.
If you’d like to switch from self-hosting to the web app, you can export your JSON file from your self-hosted instance and import it into the web version—that’s it. The web version has more robust privacy options than most web apps, including local-only storage or import/export to flat files, meaning your data can remain local if you wish.
We’re excited about what this change means for the future of ProjectionLab. It allows us to move faster, build more powerful features, and provide an even better experience for everyone.
